Skin Patch Testing
This method is used to detect allergies. There are many causes of allergies which vary person to person and skin patch testing is used to identify which substance, by touch only, has caused the allergy. (Any allergy caused by diet or inhalation of allergens is NOT detected by this method).
Allergy Consultation
When you have booked your consultation, please bring the following to your consultation:
- Any substance you suspect may have caused your skin rash
- A list of prescribed medication or anything you may have bought from your pharmacy
- Any hair treatment used
- Any nail polish used
- Toiletries and skin care products regularly used
- Workplace: If you suspect the substance is at your workplace, please try and bring a sample with you or write down the details of the chemicals (your employer’s quality control department may hold chemical details)
Your Consultant may require a series of three visits in order to determine, after tests have been made, the cause of the problem. At one of these visits the nurse may apply a number of small aluminium discs to your back containing a small amount of the substance to be tested. These will remain for approximately 48 hours, when they will be tested for results.
