Keratosis comes in two forms: Actinic Keratosis or Solar Keratosis, and is a skin condition which develops with age. This condition is usually caused by long term sun exposure. The condition presents itself with hard, dry, scaly spots of skin in the scalp, face, hands and forearms.
In milder cases, your consultant dermatologist may prescribe a variety of creams, once he has made a diagnosis. If the Keratosis has thickened it may be necessary to use a technique called “cryotherapy” to freeze off the Keratosis, which involves the use of liquid nitrogen.
If the Keratosis is extremely thickened and raised, surgery may be necessary involving a biopsy. This procedure could result in the removal of the Keratosis with a surgical curette or a scalpel.
The recovery period after surgery should be quick and you could possibly return home within the hour after surgery is complete.
There is likely to be some scarring or discolouration of the skin around the affected area.
